The Journey of Disease
I was flabbergasted. All I managed to say was, ―Wha…?‖ The doctor looked me straight in the eye over his reading glasses, ―Joe, I think you have diabetes.‖
―How can that be possible?‖ I stammered.
―Your fasting blood glucose is 177 and your hemoglobin A1c is 7.8.‖ He stated.
―What does that mean?‖ I asked.
―Your body can no longer deal with the sugar that it is taking in.‖ He spoke as if he had said this a thousand times. ―Part of your pancreas has died or is at least wearing out, so it‘s not working right. When you eat refined sugar or starches like white bread, white rice, pasta, potatoes, or corn your blood sugar goes up too high. Over time the high blood sugar can cause blindness, kidney failure and amputations.‖
My mind was racing and I was about to ask the doctor how this could have happened when he cut me off, ―The last time you came for an exam was two years ago, right?‖
